NIGHT WALKS

ALUM ROCK NIGHT WALKS SAFETY TIPS

1. BE AWARE
It’s important to be aware and pay attention to your surroundings especially in the dark when it becomes harder to distinguish objects from people.
2. WALK THE SAME ROUTE
Plan and walk the same route through the neighborhood. Contact your local sheriff or police department to submit your walking plan so they know who is wandering around the neighborhood.
3. CARRY ID
Whether it’s a driver’s license in your pocket or an ID bracelet, it will prove useful if first responders need to identify you and contact loved ones.
4. WALK AGAINST TRAFFIC
Facing traffic as you walk not only provides drivers a clear view of what’s ahead of them, but also gives you a visual of oncoming vehicles in case you need to make any last-minute maneuvers. If possible, try avoiding rush hour times—the less cars you have to deal with the better. If you find headlights blinding, wear a cap or visor.
5. BRING A CELL PHONE
Since there’s no way to be 100% certain of exactly what may happen or what you could encounter, be sure to have your cellphone with you at all times for emergency purposes. If you see something going on in the neighborhood that looks suspicious do not confront anyone. Simply walk away and call 911.

6. BRING A FLASHLIGHT
Bring a flashlight or download a flashlight app on your phone for better visibility in areas with no streets lights.
7. WEAR BRIGHT OR REFLECTIVE CLOTHING
These days there’s plenty of neon, light-reflecting run apparel and shoes designed to make yourself more visible at night and prevent accidents.  At a minimum the group leader and tail should wear bright or reflective clothing.  Note: You should also refrain from using red or blue colors that could be confused as gang clothing.
